چکیده

ÐInput buffered switch architecture has become attractive for implementing high performance routers and expanding use of the Internet sees an increasing need for quality of service. It is challenging to provide a scheduling technique that is both highly efficient and fair in resource allocation. In this paper, we first introduce an iterative fair scheduling(i FS) scheme for input buffered switches that supports fair bandwidth distribution among the flows and achieves asymptotically 100 percent throughput. The iFS is evaluated both under synthetic workload and with Web traces from the Internet. Compared to the commonly used synthetic input, our simulation results reveal significant difference in performance when the real network traffic is employed. We then consider fair scheduling under various buffer management mechanisms and analyze their impact on the fairness in bandwidth allocation. Our studies indicate that early packet discard in anticipation of congestion is necessary and per-flow based buffering is effective for protecting benign users from being adversely affected by misbehaved traffic. Buffer allocation according to bandwidth reservation is especially helpful when the input traffic is highly bursty. FGFFQ: A Scalable Real-Time Packet Scheduling Technique for Terabit Routers

Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ) is a packet scheduling technique that has been proposed and is currently used in modern network routers to provide end-to-end delay and bandwidth guarantees. Unfortunately the scalability of existing WFQ implementation techniques in large-scale backbone routers is relatively poor. Various approximation techniques have been proposed to improve WFQ's scheduling eecienc...

A New Fair Weighted Fair Queuing Scheduling Algorithm in Differentiated Services Network

Many new technologies has been proposed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to cover the new real time applications which are becomes very important in today’s Internet demands. One such technology is Differentiated Services (DiffServ). This has been introduced to provide better QoS where the routers provide PHBs to aggregate traffic for different levels of services and the scheduling...

High Performance Switches and Routers

Traditionally, Internet routers only provide best effort service by processing each incoming packet in the same manner. With the emergence of new applications, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) would like routers to provide different QoS levels to different applications. To meet these QoS requirements, routers need to implement new mechanisms, such as admission control, resource reservation, pe...

The role of packet-dropping mechanisms in QoS differentiation

Many research teams are developing technologies to turn the Internet into a QoS-capable network, which is one of the biggest challenges that this communication system currently faces. Naturally, at the core of such a challenge are IP routers and the technology they use. It is a well known fact that the common packet scheduling discipline that is used in routers (first come first served) makes t...
